Guitar legend Carlos Santana and his band completed a residency set of dates at Las Vegas House of Blues during November, and the house was rocking and dancing to the calypso sound from the standing rows down front to the highbrow tables. Carlos Santana took the stage with a full band backing and played nearly two hours for the packed House of Blues, starting out with some smooth instrumental jazzy mix and riding into “Love is You” and really drawing the crowd in with “Black Magic Woman” to get the house singing along. The set showcased some classic Santana songs but also was geared toward the guitar enthusiast, as there were many long solos and group jams throughout. This touring band hosted two vocalists, Tony Lindsay and Andy Vargas who took turns with key hits and both held their own styles up for the crowd favorites. The band relied heavily on percussion backbone, with drums, congas, timbales all taking a turn for solos and key turns in the spotlight. Brass backup got their turn in the limelight, and the back up rock essentials of the band kept pace with Santana throughout the instrumental sessions in between better known hits. “Oye Como Va” got the dancing going on the clubs mid level, as couples hit the floor and showed their Latino flair, and kept going to the smoother sounds of “Maria Maria”. The party sounds of “Foo Foo” sent the room into a whole other realm, as the crowd from the front to all the way on the back jumped and clapped and danced to the music. Things slowed down a little on “Incident at Neshabur” and “Batuka” led into “No One to Depend On” while the audience sang along. Brass came alive with “Everybody’s Everything” and “Corazon Espinado” brought cheers from the crowd, and “Jingo” brought the dancing back up full tilt.
Carlos took a moment to talk to the crowned and reflect, and peppered in the conversation were themes of Acceptance, Energy, and Happiness, saying “People do a lot of stupid sh*t. Our purpose is to invite you to discard baggage and things that don’t work anymore. Happiness, peace of mind and good health, what else could you want?…… Choose to make everyday the best day of your life.” Wisdom to learn from and to live by, and music to make the feelings come alive as Santana led the band in “Love Supreme”. Santana announced a special guest for the night, and Jack Bruce (Cream) took the stage amidst cheering and awe, where he shared vocals and played bass for a surprise rendition of “Sunshine of Your Love”. A classic moment of legends on the stage, and the two continued with an instrumental jam and then Bruce singing “Spoonful” before hugging Santana and waving a farewell.
Santana finished out the set with “Smooth/Dame Tu Amor” and returned for an encore that brought the crowd to their feet and the band to bows before the night ended. A fantastic show and a great crowd, a great time spent with music and what felt like new friends.
